Description
1935 Ford 48 5 Window Deluxe Coupe
The Model 48 was an update on Ford's V8-powered Model 40A, the company's main product. Introduced in 1935, the Model 48 was given a cosmetic refresh annually, begetting the 1937 Ford before being thoroughly redesigned for 1941. The 1935 Ford's combination of price, practicality, and looks vaulted the company ahead of rival Chevrolet for the sales crown that year, with 820,000 sold.
For consignment a Deluxe 5 window coupe with some very tasteful and tasty upgrades, beautiful wire wheels, wide whites, an upgraded engine, power glide transmission, a rumble seat, and overstuffed velour buttoned interior. Yowza!
Exterior
This first year offering of this model from 1935 is all rust free, straight steel, and bathed in buttercream pearl paint. It appears to still be wet; it is that high on the shiny scale! From its V shaped "shield styled" grille with shiny vertical ribs flanked on either side by bullet style chrome encased headlights and a curved bumper below a running greyhound hood ornament leads the way. A vented chromed accented cowled style hood is flanked fin either side by beautiful and gracefully curved fenders which frame knockoff styled wire wheels wrapped in wide whites on all 4 corners. A pristine rubber covered running board connects the front and rear exterior mounted fenders, and the rear fender does a beautiful job of setting the stage for the "continental" spare tire cover, edged in wide chrome and neatly nestled on the rear deck and floating above the curved rear bumper. A rumble seat is available for the taking in the back as well, and on top of the curved styled roofline which has a central canvas panel, sports frameless tinted glass. Sparse use of chrome trimmings keep the art deco inspired lines in line on this car, and stalk styled taillights in chrome hang off the rear of each rear quarter. Underneath, twin exhaust chromed tips peek out from under the rear bumper.
Interior
A swing of the door and we are met with a visual image of luxury and softness, with a touch of tufted triangulated buttoned overstuffed velour in tan and brown. Nice re-chromed original cranks and actuators are on, as well as a leather with wood grain accented door pull. Inside more textural eye candy with a buttoned and triangular tufted velour bench which matches the doors. Some extra wide brown piping has been thrown in for more visual fun and not does a great job of delineating the tufted seat toppers from the bolsters. In front, the original dash design has been retained, but is now fully wood grained over metal and has a new gauge cluster of black faced Autometer gauges with white numerals and lettering. A centrally located tachometer is mounted just below the crank for the front windshield pop out, along with the ignition and a few extra knobs and pulls. Over on the passenger's side is a glovebox and just below an aftermarket AM/FM/CD player hanging below the dash. Directly behind the front bench is a set of jump seats which face each other in the center. This is a gateway for the flooring of the rumble seat, which is in tan smooth vinyl for the elements, but has more buttoned and triangular tufted panels throughout. Tan carpeting, nice and clean floods all the floors and a velour headliner "buttons up" the interior.
Drivetrain
A lift of the yellow vented cowled hood and we are greeted with a newly polished and shiny 327ci Bowtie V8. It is topped with a polished Edelbrock intake and this sports a 4-barrel Weber carburetor on top. On back is the Powerglide 2-speed automatic making this car a breeze to drive. The rear axle weighs in at 3.36 gear ratio. Seen are some nice features such as new wiring, and a corrosion free brake fluid master cylinder. This is all kept nice and cool with a new radiator recently installed.
Undercarriage
A rust-free X frame is solid and has rust free floor pans and body hangers as well as rust free rockers underneath. Transverse leaf springs are on upfront, and leaf springs on the back. Dual shiny glass pack style exhaust is now on, as well as front disc brakes and rear drums.
Drive-Ability
Smooth starter, easy idle and comes to life very quickly when the accelerator is pressed. It handles nicely and has good bias free braking. All functions were working during my test drive
A very nice example of the first year offering of this Ford 48 5 window coupe. Good paint, solid undercarriage, and mechanically updated for ease of 12 Volt operation, and some snappy power from the 327 cubes. It is very easy on the eyes with the pearl yellow as well, almost having a calming effect, until you strap in and press the accelerator. Giddyup!!
