Description:
Born without arms, Leak became a popular circus sideshow freak, performing with P.T. Barnum's troupe alongside General Tom Thumb. Scarce IPS, 2½" X 4¼", n.p., 1872 May 18. Very good. Nice closeup portrait with just enough torso visible to show her armless condition. Beneath, she boldly signs "Ann E. Leak / Born without arms" in a fair script -- written by holding the pen in her toes and in a surprisingly neat, respectable hand (so to speak). On the verso, she adds: "Presented to / Mrs. E.P. Smith, / By / Ann E. Leak, / Born without arms, / Georgia. / Age 30 yrs / May 18, 1872." Very scarce.
