    She was nominated for a Tony Award for her 1965 performance in James Baldwin's The Amen Corner.
    She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Sidney
    Poittier's mother in G
    uess Whose Coming to Dinner
    (1967) also starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine
    Hepburn. Other notable films include
    In the Heat of the Night
    (1967) and
    Mahogany
    (1975). She also won
    two Primetime Emmys.
